Max Linder, d’un astre et d’un désastre
De 1907 à 1925, durant l’âge d’or du cinéma français, Max Linder s’impose au monde. « First screen celebrity », ce jeune dandy comique né en 1883 dans le Bordelais, dans une famille de petits vignerons, devient le premier acteur jouissant d’une adulation planétaire.
Charles Pathé a créé le plus grand studio du monde grâce à un « management » industriel novateur et audacieux. Il produit et distribue les films de Max Linder qui sont acclamés de Calcutta à Saint- Pétersbourg, de La Havane à Berlin, d’Odessa à New York.
Ayant conquis gloire et fortune, au summum d’une célébrité mondiale, dans la nuit du 31 octobre 1925, à l’hôtel Baltimore, à Paris, Max Linder met fin à ses jours. Il entraîne avec lui sa très jeune épouse, abandonne un film en cours, l’hôtel particulier qu’il rénovait à grands frais et sa fille de 16 mois.
À ce jour, personne n’a considéré l’œuvre de ce premier acteur- auteur-réalisateur à l’aune de son suicide et du meurtre de son épouse, ni cherché à comprendre de quoi ses films étaient le symptôme.
Max Linder, of a star and a disaster
From 1907 to 1925, during the golden age of French cinema, Max Linder made his mark on the world. The ‘first screen celebrity’, this young comic dandy born in 1883 in the Bordeaux region to a family of small winegrowers, became the first actor to enjoy worldwide adulation.
Charles Pathé created the world’s largest studio thanks to his innovative and daring industrial management style. He produced and distributed Max Linder’s films, which were acclaimed from Calcutta to Saint Petersburg, from Havana to Berlin, and from Odessa to New York.
Having achieved fame and fortune, at the height of his global celebrity, on the night of 31 October 1925, at the Hotel Baltimore in Paris, Max Linder took his own life. He took his very young wife with him, abandoning a film in progress, the mansion he was renovating at great expense and his 16-month-old daughter.
To this day, no one has considered the work of this first actor-writer-director in light of his suicide and the murder of his wife, nor sought to understand what his films were symptomatic of.
