L’Histoire de la Pagode est celle d’un rêve, celui d’Amélie Kelsen, vendeuse au Bon Marché, qui épouse le copropriétaire, et fait construire cette ode à la Belle Époque et au Japon. Devenue salle de cinéma en 1931, la Pagode programme les films les plus incisifs, mais aussi les plus controversés, au point de s’imposer après-guerre comme le temple de la cinéphilie.
Tel un phénix, cette salle au destin mouvementé n’a cessé de vivre et de mourir. Condamnée en 2015, elle va renaître en 2025, dans son fabuleux décor restauré.
The Pagode of Babylone
The story of the Pagode is that of a dream, that of Amélie Kelsen, a saleswoman at Le Bon Marché, who married the co-owner and had this ode to the Belle Époque and Japan built. Having become a movie theater in 1931, the Pagode screened the most incisive, but also the most controversial, films, to the point of establishing itself after the war as a temple of cinephile.
Like a phoenix, this theater with its eventful history has never ceased to live and die. Closed in 2015, it will be reborn in 2025, in its fabulously restored decor.
