Le Byrd de Richmond

Les Américains ont ceci d’unique qu’ils ont réussi, en à peine deux siècles, à se forger une Histoire. Une construction extraordinaire dans laquelle l’architecture et le cinéma prirent une place prépondérante.

Ces gigantesques théâtres où l’Amérique continue de projeter les grands et petits chapitres de son histoire, tiennent leur place parfois avec difficulté. Le Byrd en est un des plus beaux exemples. Au pays du capitalisme roi, de la libre entreprise et de la primauté de la réussite, ce bâtiment anachronique aurait dû fermer il y a longtemps. Mais les Américains sont parfois plus attachés à leur jeune Histoire qu’à leur dollar. Aujourd’hui, le Byrd survit grâce aux associations qui continuent de l’entretenir et de le faire vivre quotidiennement.

Le film est un portrait de ce théâtre et de ces Américains de Richmond, ville symbole qui fut la capitale de la confédération sudiste.

The Byrd of Richmond

The Americans have a specific talent: they’ve managed to create their History in barely two centuries.

America still projects great and small chapters of its history in these gigantic theaters. Spectacular, slightly pretentious, their lofty presence dominates the main streets in every city. Yet they often have to struggle to survive. The Byrd is one of the finest examples of this. In a land where capitalism is king and free enterprise and success the rule, this anachronistic building should have died years ago. But Americans often care more for their youthful history than for their dollar. The Byrd lives on today thanks to the non-profit organizations who contribute to its upkeep and day to day survival.

Our film is a portrait of this movie theater, of these Americans, and of Richmond, Virginia, a symbolic town once the capital of the South Confederacy.
