Le Champo du Quartier Latin

Une salle du Quartier latin : le Champollion. L’âge d’or de la cinéphilie. Paris, capitale du cinéma. Une époque : les années 60-80. De jeunes cinéphiles. Ils vivent leur passion jusqu’à l’incandescence.

François Truffaut l’appelait « mon Quartier général » en référence au Quartier Latin, Chabrol ma « seconde université » en référence à la Sorbonne voisine. 

« C’est avec la Nouvelle vague que se développa une passion pure : la cinéphilie », nous explique Antoine de Baecque. Après les années 60, la cinéphilie, véritable raison de vivre pour plusieurs générations, a son histoire, ses histoires. Celles de jeunes qui ont brûlé à la vision de films, qui ont compris qu’un cinéaste pouvait être l’égal d’un Flaubert, d’un Bonnard ou d’un Brahms, qui se sont battus pour des films, qui se sont aimés pour d’autres. Et le plus souvent ces films étaient vus au Champo.

Raconter l’histoire du Champo, c’est aussi raconter l’histoire de la cinéphile.

The Champo of Latin Quarter

In 2018, the Champollion, known as the Champo, celebrates its 80th birthday. It remains the third oldest cinema in the capital, still in operation. And despite a neighborhood that has lost its soul, the cinema still totilize more than 100,000 entries annually, which shows its astonishing vitality.

François Truffaut called the Champo « my headquarters » in reference to the Latin Quarter, Chabrol my « second university » in reference to the neighboring Sorbonne. 

And it was with the New Wave that a pure passion developed: the cinephilie, explains Antoine de Baecque. After the 60s, the cinephilie, real reason to live for several generations has its history and its stories. Those of young people who burned to the vision of films, who understood that a filmmaker could be equal to a Flaubert, a Bonnard or a Brahms, who fought for films, who loved each others for other films. And most often these films were seen at Champo.

To tell the history of Champo is also to tell the story of cinema lovers.
